New 60 l/min Direct Acting Relief Valve Cartridge

We have listened to our customers and included all the best features into our new range of compact relief valve cartridges.  The new 60 l/min Direct Acting Relief Valve Cartridge, which is adjustable from 25 to 250 bar, uses a new external adjuster and lock nut.  This can be fitted with an optional tamper evident cover.

The new cartridge will be incorporated as standard into our V4-40 and V5-60 spool valve range in January 2016 and will be available in a range of G1/2 line mounted manifolds, including a dual line, twin cartridge option, preventing shock loads in hydraulic motors etc.

We plan to extend the range to include  60 l/min and 100 l/min pilot operated versions with hand wheel options early in 2016.

Our new cartridges will use the same cavity as the current ones and will be available as a retro-fit to the current Hy-Pro V5-60 spool valve range. Information is available from sales@hypro.co.uk and you can talk to our sales team on 01626 863634 .  The website will be updated shortly.

Autopilot Pump in its 37th year

It’s always a pleasure to hear from a customer who has been using one of our products for a long time.  Today, however, I think we have broken all records! This Hy-ProDrive ‘102’ unit, one of our first pumps, is still happily operating the autopilot in a Princess 412 in its 37th year.  Weighing 9 tons and 41 feet long, these luxury motor cruisers were built between 1979 and 1982 and our 2.5 litre reversing pump was fitted in 1979.

The yacht is currently undergoing routine maintenace and the engineers, Mantsbrite Marine, rang to ask us what current the pump would be drawing.

Hy-ProDrive have moved on since 1979 and now offer a range of reversing pumps, the equivalent now being the PR25.  The new pumps, being precision gear pumps are super quiet and very economical on power.  This is particularly important on sailing yachts where people enjoy an engine-free experience for most of the time.

The Hy-ProDrive range is sold to major autopilot manufacturers around the world, including Raymarine, Garmin, B&G and Coursemaster.

New Cutting Edge Horizontal Machining Centre

We have recently taken delivery of our latest new machining centre.  The new Okuma horizontal mill braved a two month sea voyage from Japan and the trauma of the dockyard, only to be held up here in Dawlish by the glorious Devon weather!  Torrential rain and high winds meant that the machine had to remain safely tucked up on its trailer for a day. This being the largest machine we have ever purchased, the doorway was the next problem and we all held our breath as it was hoisted off the lorry outside our office windows!

The new horizontal mill will utilise a massive revolving fixture, meaning that 16 raw castings can be machined in one load.  This compares to standard vertical machining centres where there is space for only one or two components affixed to the base plate.

The new Okuma is also an immensely powerful machine with 60m/min rapids, 15,000 RPM and 70 bar high pressure coolant which will enable us to reduce our cutting time and thereby increase our output by 20% compared to our current machines.  The useful ‘turn cut function’  even allows machining of  what would normally be turned features by synchronising the rotating tool edge with the x-y coordinate arc.  Another useful and literally cutting edge function is ‘machining Navi’ which is a function that captures vibration via a microphone then optimises the cutting conditions to eliminate any chatter.  It doesn’t stop there either.  The new mill comes with a 10 pallet pool, allowing pre-prepared pallets to be loaded automatically outside normal working hours.

15The tool carousel carries 218 tools, meaning that down time for set up becomes a thing of the past and programming the machine will be carried out using virtual software, whilst the machine continues to run other jobs.

Preparations for receiving the new machine have been extensive.  They have included an extension to the factory, sorting out our power supply and digging out the machine shop floor to a depth of 500 mm before beefing it up with re-enforced concrete!  Special fixtures for the machine have also had to be designed and manufactured and programs written using the virtual software.  These have been tested successfully by a company in Derbyshire on an identical machine.

Such machines as this Okuma and our sliding head Citizen lathes will be the way forward for our Company, improving productivity and reducing costs, enabling us to compete with competition from abroad.    As we machine more than 90% of our own components for our Hy-Pro valves and Hy-ProDrive pumps, we will continue to invest in new machinery each year, ensuring continuity of supply, quality and cost.

Cycle To Work Day

Hy-Pro celebrated our healthy workforce last week, when eleven of our employees took up the Cycle To Work Day challenge.  The group were rewarded with a bacon baguette for lunch and a photograph for posterity!

Most of those taking part regularly cycle to work, with some travelling around 12 miles each way from Exeter to Dawlish.  This particular route takes them down a purpose built path along the beautiful Exe estuary.

Always ready to encourage health and respect for the environment, our management team introduced a the scheme some months ago.  This scheme has enabled employees to acquire new bycicles and related equipment at discount prices whilst spreading the cost over 12 months.  Our employees have benefited by being fitter and making savings on fuel while the Company has noticed more space in the car park!

Group HES now an Approved Distributor

Solar Energy Used To Machine Hydraulic Control Valves

In March 2013, in a drive to reduce soaring energy costs and to maximise return on investment, we took the decision to purchase solar panels.  Installed by Empower Engineering in Dorset and covering all but the North facing factory rooves, the arrays of photovoltaic panels are capeable of producing 50 kw of power.  Since installation, the panels have generated a total of 114.58 mwh and, as we use all of the power generated during week days, this represents a saving in bought in electricity of over £12,000.  The icing on the cake is the saving of 63 tonnes of CO2 which would have been used to generate electricity from carbon based sources.  That’s what you call green manufacturing!

Solar generation performance can be monitored in real time from anywhere using a web based application.  Web monitoring by the supplier, Empower Engineering, also means that any problems (including dirty panels) can be diagnosed and addressed quickly.

We operate a state of the art machine shop, producing all of our own components and the savings made have reduced costs and enabled the us to be more competitive.  With the receipt of the FIT (feed in tariff), which gradually covers the cost of the panels over their lifetime, on top of the actual electricity savings, return on investment has been over 12%.  At a time when interest rates have been very low, this has been an excellent investment for us and effective cost control for our customers.

Designing for Efficiency – Solenoid valve

With a constant eye on the future and with environmental considerations in mind the Hy-Pro design team have been busy focusing on the three popular valve ranges.  The tried and trusted solenoid valves can be a cost effective and robust solution.

Any restrictions in the flow passages of hydraulic systems create a back-pressure which makes pumps and in turn their driving engines work harder.

All the time the PTO is engaged and the valve is in neutral it is burning fuel to circulate oil at pressure through the hydraulic system. Reduce that pressure and you save fuel – simple!

At the heart of the widely regarded V5-60E and V3-100E solenoid operated section valves is the pilot pressurising cartridge. This compact device provides a small pilot pressure to activate the main spools. With help from the latest 3D CAD technolgy the highly skilled design team have reduced the pilot pressure by an incredible 40%. This equates to less power, less heat generation and less money spent on fuel!
