Hypro’s New OKUMA Pallet Loading Milling Machine

We have recently taken delivery of our brand-new OKUMA pallet loading milling machine, which was purchased to assist with the increased demand within the marine side of operations.

The OKUMA machine will enable us to streamline our current capacity, by replacing and managing the same level of production as 2 of our two older machines.

While not its only purpose, the primary operation of the new OKUMA will be to produce product for our marine operations, which have seen noticeable growth and require a greater level of capacity and flexibility in production.

Why was the OKUMA Milling Machine Chosen?

We looked carefully at all the options available to us to ensure we were making the right choice when it came to upgrading our production. This included the possibility of using robotics to feed our existing machines.

However, as our aim was to increase production capacity whilst maintaining or reducing current direct costs, the OKUMA was revealed to be the best solution for the job.

This was because we already have a similar machine running on site, and so the complexities and abilities of the machine are already understood. This meant that not only are training requirements reduced, but we are also fully aware of tooling and fixture requirements of the machine. This previous experience enables us to integrate the OKUMA into production quickly and easily.

As well as this, by installing a second OKUMA machine, we have a backup to our existing model. The pallets are interchangeable and thus we have the flexibility to protect one of our core production requirements for the valve side of operations.

What Benefits Does the OKUMA Provide?

One of the main benefits of the OKUMA is its ‘lights out’ functionality. The standard CNC mills which it replaces require personnel full-time to operate. The OKUMA is able to run independently as soon as the pallets are loaded.

This new machine, as with the existing OKUMA will be able to run through the night without being manned. This is a huge benefit to productivity.

With regards to our customers, the increased productivity and protection of core component production means that we are able to maintain delivery dates as well as maintaining cost effective operations.
