Hypro’s Procurement Manager, Neil, completes the 2024 London Marathon on behalf of Macmillan Cancer support!

Our Procurement Manager Neil, completed the London Marathon last weekend.

Neil, who joined Hypro in 2022 was a keen runner at school and returned to the sport eight years ago starting with the Parkrun 5k’s but ultimately going on to far longer events,  including Ultra Marathons.

His ultimate ‘Bucket List ‘event however, has always been the London Marathon and having entered the ballot every year for the last six years, Neil was finally selected in July 2023  and training began in earnest.

Neil

Neil has fund raised by running on behalf of Macmillan for the last six years. The charity is close to his heart, after he saw firsthand the care given to members of his own family by the charity.

Two years ago, he ran 75 miles around our very own local landmark, Powderham Castle,  to raise much needed funds for the organisation. Macmillan provide services for people living with cancer at every stage, including supporting their families, healthcare professionals and employers and 98% of their work is funded by voluntary donations.

Last weekend Neil was waiting in Wave 5 at the starting line, amongst the masses and ready to go.  He described the atmosphere as ‘electric’ with so much positive support for all the runners. He said “my shirt had my name on it , and throughout the run , those lining the roads were calling out, come on Neil you can do it! ” . He says the ultimate boost was a billboard message enroute from his wife, spurring him on to achieve his target time.

Neil had wanted to complete the run in 4 hours and with a slight route deviation,  he finished in 4 hours and 5 minutes, a superb effort. With his usual sense of humour, Neil quipped that without the diversion, he would have achieved 3 hours and 59 minutes. Neil raised £260 for the charity via his enthuse giving page which is still open should you wish to support this worthy cause.

Afterwards he was privileged to attend the Macmillan post-race party, held at the Foreign and Commonwealth office, a fitting end to a day that Neil says he will never forget.
